Most modern cars have gauges and alerts for their various systems. When a tire loses pressure or your engine needs to be checked, a light shows on your dashboard. When you’re running out of gas, your car lets you know. However, when it comes to your dentures, there may not be an obvious warning system, unfortunately, but if you’re paying close attention, you can recognize the signs that it’s time to meet with your dentist and replace your prosthetic teeth.
Your Dentures Slip While You Talk or Eat.
Changes in how your dentures fit occur slowly over time, so it can be difficult to know exactly when your dentures have become loose. However, if you find that they slip out of place while you speak or chew food, it’s a sure sign they are not fitting like they used to. In this situation, you may simply need an adjustment, but it could also mean that a new set of dentures is needed to give you the proper fit. Otherwise, you will continue to suffer the embarrassment and frustration of slipping dentures.
Your Bite Isn’t as Strong as It Once Was.
Are you suddenly struggling to bite and grind foods that were easy to eat a couple of years ago with dentures? When these prosthetics fit correctly, you should be able to eat most foods comfortably. Therefore, when eating fresh fruits and vegetables or other tougher foods becomes more challenging, it could mean that your dentures need an adjustment or replacement.
Your Gums Hurt or Are Irritated.
While in your mouth, your dentures should feel comfortable, but your jawbone and mouth will change over time. After a while, the hard plastic can rub against or put pressure on certain areas of your gums, causing irritation and pain. You don’t have to tolerate discomfort when replacing your dentures could give you back a more natural-feeling smile.
Your Dentures Break or Crack.
Although durable, dentures are not indestructible. Whether you accidentally drop them or they are showing their age, dentures can become chipped, discolored, or cracked. If they are damaged, stop wearing them and meet with your dentist right away. Continuing to have broken dentures in your mouth could cause additional harm to your soft tissues, any remaining teeth you may have, and your jawbone. It’s safer to replace them!
Like the warning signs your car gives you when there’s trouble, don’t ignore the signs that your dentures need to be replaced. The sooner you take care of the issue, the sooner you can have peace of mind and confidence in your smile again!
